Celestite is really a more popular name for celestine which is a member of the baryte group of minerals with it's name originating from the Latin 'caelestis' translating to 'from the sky'.

The best examples are a clear vivid sky blue from Madagascar and occur as prismatic & tabular crystals.

It has a perfect cleavage which makes it difficult for lapidarists to cut gemstones for jewellery, so cut examples are highly prized.
